The Sustainable Banking Assessment (SUSBA), is an interactive data platform, designed and developed by Createful for the World Wildlife Federation (WWF). It allows banks across South East Asia to assess and benchmark their Corporate Governance (CG) and Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) integration performance to accelerate their efforts to stay competitive, resilient and relevant in a resource constrained, low carbon future.
WWF in Singapore approached Createful having already successfully deployed their in-depth ESG and CG assessments in a comprehensive printed report format. However, the organisation’s desire was to increase the visibility, engagement and reach of the report by producing a dynamic online platform that would allow banks to compare themselves against a detailed assessment indicator framework.
With target audiences across banking, investment, regulators and company sustainability policy teams, the website’s interface needed to strike a careful balance: provide a visually simple and intuitive experience suitable for non-technical users, while retaining access to the data and insight contained within the 70-page printed report.
With the WWF project team based in Singapore, and Createful in Bournemouth, our only option was to conduct the project remotely. This was not a problem however, as we have produced a number of solutions for overseas clients in a similar fashion, and our processes are well set out for this type of work.
Working collaboratively with WWF, we carefully mapped out the project requirements with a combination of detailed User Stories, site architecture diagrams, and hand-drawn sketches, which facilitated communication and understanding across a number of meetings conducted by phone and videoconference.
As our appreciation of WWF’s requirements became more clear, we developed a suite of wireframe designs and developed them into an interactive prototype to demonstrate our ideas for SUSBA’s interface design and user journeys. This prototype, which was deliberately unbranded, focused only on how the platform should work, allowing the WWF and Createful teams to figure out how to design an intuitive data exploration experience without being distracted with how the branding elements should be applied.
When building the technical architecture of SUSBA, we leveraged our expertise in building data-transformation engines to produce a tool that would allow a complex research dataset to be imported into the website. This can be represented in a number of different ways: allowing users to isolate the data for a selection of banks, or limiting the assessment questions they see to those matching particular sustainability issues, such as Human Rights. Users can even build their own assessment by adding or removing indicators shown on screen.
Coming full circle with the original printed report mentioned above, we also built a bespoke report generator that could instantly export a PDF of a user’s tailored assessment.
In 2020, we teamed up once again with WWF to design and build a suite of enhancements to the platform.
